Inspired by my trip to Israel with AIPAC's Education Foundation, AIEF, I made Borders, Strength & Unity, and Star of David to honor the sacrifice and commitment of the people of Israel. My work has deep ties to Israel. Even before I ever stepped foot there, The Western Wall and prayers that are rolled up and left behind were the inspiration to start rolling paper. Borders are, and it is no secret, a difficult topic for Israel. After traveling to the sacred land and spending a great deal of time with the Israeli Defense Forces, it was evident that there is an issue of where lines and borders for protection are created. Although the people of Israel often times have different opinions on where those lines need to be, there was no question that they were all there to protect the State of Israel. I made Borders out of current Israeli newspapers to show where the current lines are and to create a time capsule of Israeli news today. Within every roll of Strength & Unity a written message is embedded. Star of David also has personal messages of hope etched into the gold paint covering each roll of Israeli newspaper.
